On Day 5 of the Rio Olympics, Spain's Mireia Belmonte won the 200 meters butterfly, making her the main Spanish lady to win an Olympic swimming gold award. Australian Madeline Groves took silver and Japan's title holder Natsumi Hoshi won bronze.

In the 4×200 meters hand-off, the United States' Katie Ledecky took her third swimming gold decoration of the Rio Olympics, and fourth of her profession. Australia asserted silver and Canada the bronze.

In the men's 100 meters free-form, Australian Kyle Chalmers won gold with a period of 47.58 seconds. Pieter Timmers of Belgium took the silver and guarding champion Nathan Adrian of the United States won bronze.

There was a stun triumph in the men's 200 meters breaststroke for Dmitry Balandin of Kazakhstan as the nation won two Olympic gold awards in the space of 60 minutes. Josh Prenot of the United States guaranteed silver and Russia's Anton Chupkov took bronze, with a 0.24 seconds contrast between the main three.
